Lawyers have always been accountable for their work. That was true before AI, and it is just as true now. A brief carries your name. An argument carries your judgment. A citation carries your reputation. None of that changes because an AI tool helped you produce it faster.

That’swhy when firms talk about adopting AI for legal work, the first questionshouldn’tbe about speed or cost savings. It should be: can Iactually verifywhat this produces? If youcan’ttrace an output back to its source, check whether that source is still good law, and inspect the reasoning that connected the two, youdon’thave work product. You have a draft youcan’tstand behind.

That standard is not new. What’snew is how many lawyers are finding out the hard way that the AI tools they adoptedweren’tbuilt with it in mind.

Courts across the United States have now sanctioned attorneys forsubmittingbriefs with fabricated citations, false quotes, and mischaracterized precedent — all generated by AI and not verified by the attorneys. When those tools are built on content scraped from the web rather than authoritative legal sourcesmaintainedby practicing attorneys, the risk of error is structural. The AI has no way to know whether a case is still good law, whether a statute has been amended, or whether a citationactually supportsthe argumentit’sbeing used to make. Verification becomes difficult not because the toolsdon’tshow their work, but because the underlying sourcescan’tbe trusted in the first place.

AtThomsonReuters, weunderstandthat lawyersdon’tjust need to find the law — they need to be able to stand behind what they find. We’vealways built Westlawand Practical Lawwith that in mind, andit’sthe same principle we carried into CoCounsel Legal from the very beginning.

Built for Verification at Every Stage

When we designed CoCounsel Legal, we started from a simple premise: a lawyer should be able to verify everything the AI produces before putting their name on it. That meant buildingtools that give attorneys everything they need to do thatverificationthemselves,at every stage of the workflow.

As the research unfolds,Deep Researchshows you its work in real time, step by step. You can follow the reasoning as it develops, explorefindings as theyemerge, andrefinethe research with more specificityby answeringadditionalquestions.

As citations are built, two things work in parallel.KeyCiteis woven into every stage of the research workflow, flagging cases overruled in part, warning of proposed amendments to statutes, and surfacing cases that arefrequentlycited together even when theydon’tcite each other. Alongside it,CoCounsel Legal’s patent-pending citation ledgertracks every source the AI draws on throughout the research process and confirms that each source wasactually readand reviewed — not just referenced.Together, they give attorneys what they need toanswer the questionthatshouldprecede every citationthey rely on: does this hold up?

Before anything goes out, two more layers of review engage. The Verify function, launched in February 2026, surfaces every assertion made in the research report alongside the relevant source passages and pointers foradditionalresearch — giving attorneys everything they need toverifybefore anything goes out the door.Litigation Document Analyzergoes furtherbyidentifyingpotential misrepresentations of law throughout an entire brief, your own or opposing counsel’s. Because in litigation, what a document implies about the law matters just as much as what it explicitly says.

Every one of these capabilities exists for the same reason: because when you use AI to do legal work, you are still the one responsible for it.

The Question Every Lawyer Should Be Asking

Not all legal AI is built the same way. Some tools are little more than general-purpose foundation models with a legal label applied — with little ability to confirm whether the underlying sources are current, authoritative, or accurately represented in the answer. They can be fast. They can be impressive in a demo. But when a client’s matter is on the line and a judge is asking questions, impressive in a demo is not the standard that matters.

At VRƵ,fiduciarygradeAI is our standard for how AI should work inhighstakes professions. It’s AI designed for professionals – built on our authoritative content; protected by rigorous privacy and security safeguards; shaped and validated by subjectmatterexperts; and designed to produce transparent outputs that can be verified.

We’ve spent decades earning the trust of the legal profession. That history shaped how we built CoCounsel Legal. When your firm is evaluating which AI tools to adopt, the conversation about speed and efficiency matters. But it shouldn’t be the only conversation. Ask how the system handles accuracy. Ask what happens when you need to trace an output back to its source. Ask whether you can actually verify what it produces before your name goes on it. Those questions will tell you everything you need to know about whether a tool was built for legal work or just marketed to it.

Lawyers have always been accountable for what they put their names on. The right AI gives you the tools to meet that accountability — and the confidence to know you have.

CoCounsel Legal Is Redefining Professional AI in the UK Legal Market /en-us/posts/innovation/cocounsel-legal-is-redefining-professional-ai-in-the-uk-legal-market/ Mon, 26 Jan 2026 05:00:07 +0000 https://blogs.thomsonreuters.com/en-us/?post_type=innovation_post&p=69163 The future of legal work isn’t about AI sitting beside professionals – it’s about AI being embedded in the work itself. VRƵ marks a pivotal moment in that transformation as , introducing a new standard for what professional-grade agentic AI can deliver.

Why Agentic AI Matters

The distinction between AI copilots and agentic AI solutions isn’t just semantic – it’s fundamental to how legal work gets done. While copilots offer suggestions and assistance, agentic AI like CoCounsel Legal takes on complex, multi-step professional work with advanced reasoning, authoritative content integration, and deep subject matter expertise.

CoCounsel Legal UK home

The UK launch of CoCounsel Legal represents more than geographic expansion. It’s the convergence of critical innovations: Deep Research capabilities on both Practical Law and Westlaw Advantage, and seamless integration with existing legal technology ecosystems including Microsoft 365, document management systems, and VRƵ HighQ.

Sam Dixon, chief innovation officer at Womble Bond Dickinson, said: “We knew we needed to bring in a GenAI legal assistant to help us deliver the best possible service we can for clients. For us, the fact that CoCounsel had the ability to lean on the Westlaw content and the Practical Law content was really beneficial. And it already integrates with a lot of the rest of our legal tech stack, such as HighQ.”

CoCounsel Legal’s native integration with existing workflows means legal professionals don’t have to choose between innovation and productivity – they get both.

“We have found the working relationship with VRƵ very collaborative, transparent and supportive – real partners who go the extra mile to support us in getting value out of our relationship,” said Christina Demetriades, global operating officer, Accenture Legal. “CoCounsel is a massive opportunity for our function – we see it as a way of displacing outside counsel spend and augmenting our team in practice – I see it helping build the Future Ready Legal professional. I have already used it myself to prepare advice for our business on an upcoming opmodel transformation. It was a great value add.”

Deep Research: A Global First for UK Legal Professionals

The UK launch introduces several industry firsts. debuts globally in the UK, with its U.S. release set for February. The new brings professional-grade agentic AI research capabilities specifically tailored to UK legal content. Most significantly, both content sets are unified in a single platform, eliminating the need to navigate between systems while delivering comprehensive results across practice areas.

What makes Deep Research genuinely transformative is its ability to reason, plan, and execute comprehensive legal research autonomously. It doesn’t just retrieve information – it generates multi-step research plans, traces its logic with transparent reasoning, and delivers structured reports backed by Westlaw and Practical Law citations. Legal professionals can hand off complete research questions to an AI that understands the assignment, explains its process, sources its answers, and builds argument foundations, all with human oversight.

The Foundation for Professional AI

David Wong, chief product officer, VRƵ, said: “Professional-grade AI is fundamentally changing how legal work gets done, and with CoCounsel Legal, we’re delivering enterprise-ready agentic AI that helps UK law firms and legal departments future-proof their practices. This isn’t just about efficiency – it’s about empowering legal professionals with AI that reasons through complex problems, integrates seamlessly into existing workflows, and scales across entire organizations while maintaining the trusted, authoritative foundation our customers depend on. This isn’t just about convenience – it’s about delivering real value to our clients and their work.”

That foundation – combining advanced reasoning models, authoritative content, deep subject matter expertise, and native integration – represents the essential components needed to complete complex, multi-step professional work. It’s what separates professional-grade AI from consumer-grade tools, and what makes CoCounsel Legal uniquely positioned to transform how legal work happens in practice, not just in theory.

Looking Ahead

The UK launch of CoCounsel Legal signals a broader shift in how professional services will be delivered. As agentic AI capabilities mature and expand, the question isn’t whether AI will transform legal work – it’s whether legal professionals and organizations will embrace tools purpose-built for their needs or settle for generic solutions that promise much but deliver little.

For UK legal professionals ready to explore what professional-grade agentic AI can do for their practice, the opportunity is here. The future of legal work isn’t waiting – it’s embedded in the work itself.
